ECDL 2003 Workshops

Workshop 1 : Digital Library Evaluation - Metrics, Testbeds, and Processes

Workshop organizer: Ronald Larsen, University of Pittsburgh

Date: Thursday, August 21, 9.00 - 18.00

Aims and themes: This workshop will continue an international dialogue on metrics, testbeds, and processes for digital library evaluation that has been coordinated by the National Science Foundation in the US, and the DELOS Network of Excellence for Digital Libraries in the EU. Three classes of individuals are encouraged to participate: (1) researchers and practitioners conducting developmental work leading to new metrics and evaluation techniques, or the evaluation of old metrics and measurement techniques, (2) researchers and practitioners who can report on case studies of evaluation of digital libraries, and (3) individuals interested in understanding the current issues in digital library evaluation. The workshop is not a tutorial, however, and will assume a basic understanding of digital libraries and the tools and techniques appropriate for their evaluation.

Workshop 2 : Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services (NKOS): Evolving Standards

Workshop organizers:
Denise Bedford, The World Bank, Washington, DC, U.S.A. Email: dbedford@worldbank.org
Martin Doerr, Institute of Computer Science, Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), Greece. Email: martin@csi.forth.gr
Gregory Shreve, Director, Institute for Applied Linguistics, Kent State University, USA Email: gshreve@neo.rr.com
Douglas Tudhope, Hypermedia Research Unit, University of Glamorgan, UK Email: dstudhope@glamorgan.ac.uk

Date: Thursday, August 21, 9.00 - 18.00

Aims and themes: The Workshop is based around the theme of emerging standards in Networked Knowledge Organization Systems and Services. The full-day workshop aims to provide an overview of projects, research and development related to the usage of knowledge organization systems in Internet based services and digital libraries. We also aim to provide a basis for participation in global efforts such as the NKOS network.

Workshop 3 : Digital Libraries in Healthcare

Workshop Chairs:
Patty Kostkova, Institute of Health Sciences, City University, London, UK
Anne Adams, UCL Interaction Centre, UCL, London, UK

Date: Thursday, August 21, 9.00 - 18.00

Aims and themes: The objective of this workshop is to provide an informal forum for researchers from academia, industry and health care institutions to present their work on digital libraries in healthcare, share their experience and discuss mutual technical and user-centred interests in order to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial and real-world project needs.
Academic researchers can often provide technically brilliant solutions to theoretical problems with no applicability to the real-world systems. Real-world health care project decision makers are not involved in cutting-edge research to see how new inventions could serve the needs of real projects. User-centred research should bridge this gap but the application of this within the healthcare domain has been limited. This workshop is aiming to bridge this gap by providing digital library researchers an opportunity to discuss and collaborate with colleagues working on real-world healthcare projects. In particular, it will focus on information management in health-care digital libraries, health care information provision on the Internet, searching and Web crawling, personalization aspects and end-user evaluation and needs for information in digital libraries.
The presentations are not expected to be directly related to existing healthcare applications but should address technical or implementation issues that need to be solved in real health care systems. By attracting researchers and decision makers from academia, industry and health care institutions, this workshop will be a unique event providing a forum for sharing both technical user-centred interests enabling post-workshop collaboration.

Workshop 4 : Web Archives

Workshop Chair: Catherine Lupovici, Bibliothèque nationale de France

Date: Thursday, August 21, 9.00 - 18.00

Aims and themes: ECDL Workshops on Web Archiving are held in association with the European Conferences on Digital Libraries (ECDL) since 2001. The aim of these Workshops is to bring together researchers, practitioners, graduate students, and IT developers with expertise and interest in building Web archives. These workshops provide a forum for interaction among librarians, archivists, academic researchers and industrial researchers interested in establishing effective methods and developing improved solution for Web archiving.

Workshop 5 : CLEF 2003 - Workshop of the Cross-language Evaluation Forum

Organizer: Carol Peters - Italian National Research Council

Dates:
Thursday, August 21, 09.00 - 17.00 (regular programme) 17.30 - 19.00 (reception and poster session)
